Westinghouse wins major contract for vacuum vessel welding
On Wednesday 25 June, ITER awarded one of the most pivotal responsibilities of tokamak assembly to Westinghouse Electric Company. For the American powerhouse, better known for its decades of nuclear fission plant design and construction, this will be a key opportunity to bring its world-class capabilities and expertise...
2025-06-27 - The fifth central solenoid module completes its travel along the ITER itinerary from the port of Fos-sur-Mer and arrives onsite at ITER early in the morning of 27 June. Only one more module is necessary to complete the central solenoid stack at ITER, and it is already en route after tests were completed at US ITER supplier General Atomics.
Major contract awarded for vacuum vessel welding
2025-06-25 - ITER awards one of the most pivotal responsibilities of tokamak assembly to Westinghouse Electric Company: the in-pit welding of the ITER plasma chamber. The contract covers the simultaneous welding of nine vacuum vessel sector modules to form a single, circular torus.
Central solenoid module nears ITER
2025-06-24 - A central solenoid module that was shipped last month from the port of Houston, Texas, is now on the road to ITER. Manufactured by General Atomics for the US Domestic Agency, the module will travel another two nights along the ITER Itinerary to reach the worksite by Friday.
Women in Fusion: what future workforce?
2025-06-23 - At SOFE 2025 in Boston, a Women in Fusion (WiF) event spotlights the urgent need to build a more intentional pipeline for future talent. In a context of intense competition for roles currently, yet a predicted strong increase in the need for well-trained professionals in the future, how do we attract the next generation to the field of fusion?
ITER @ SOFE2025
2025-06-23 - The 2025 Symposium on Fusion Engineering opens in Boston (USA) on 23 June. Takeaway number one: the ecosystem around fusion is growing—a direct result of over 20 years of designing and fabricating components for the giant ITER project, and of the dynamism of the new fusion startups that are disproving the old saying "fusion is always 30 years away."
Yoga Day at ITER
2025-06-23 - An early start to the day for dozens of participants to the International Yoga Day event on the ITER site. Hosted by the newly established Consulate of India in Marseille, in cooperation with the ITER Organization, the event was organized before the start of the workday on Monday 23 June.
Summer staff party
2025-06-20 - Just one day ahead of the summer solstice, ITER staff gathered for a summer luncheon party. It had been a busy week, with a meeting of the ITER Council, the lifting of a second "segment" of the vacuum vessel into the tokamak pit, and a semestrial all-staff meeting offering the opportunity to ask questions, and receive answers, about project status and plans for the future.
36th ITER Council: continued strong project execution
2025-06-19 - The Thirty-Sixth Meeting of the ITER Council concludes on 19 June 2025. The Council welcomes continued strong project execution and recent construction milestones, including the insertion into the assembly pit on 18 June of a second vacuum vessel module.
Council views recently added sector module
2025-06-19 - Representatives to the Thirty-Sixth Meeting of the ITER Council (IC-36) stand at the top of the tokamak pit, looking down on the never-before-seen sight of TWO sector modules.
Just a few more centimetres
2025-06-18 - The radial beam supporting new sector module #6 is still a few centimetres above the one that has been in the pit since April. These workers from the CNPE consortium are watching closely as it travels the last bit of distance.
Two in the pit
2025-06-18 - Sector modules #7 and #6 are 15 cm apart in the tokamak pit.
Sector module #6 installed in pit
2025-06-18 - The second of nine modules required to form the ITER plasma chamber is installed in the tokamak assembly pit on 17-18 June 2025. Sector modules #7 and #6 are now side by side in the pit, with 15 cm between them.

Close now
2025-06-18 - The cranes have pivoted sector module #6 above the pit to the orientation required for its slow descent.
